The film “Suudl – Bench” by Arltan Bembeyev

On June 18, the National Library named after A.M. Amur-Sanan successfully hosted the premiere of the film “Soudle” (“Bench”) by the film director, founder of the studio “TENGR Cinema” Arltan Bembeyev, known for the films “Mini Tag” (“My Steppe”), “Goodbye, the land of Kalmykia”.

Arltan shot a story about a chance acquaintance, which reveals a huge range of social and existential problems and pressing issues of our society. The script was written after the director saw an elderly man on the streets of Elista several times and began to reflect on his fate. As a result, there was a film about how even in the most difficult times, at least for a moment, you can find a soul mate.
The film is notable for the fact that most of the actors involved in it are not professionals and were shot out of interest, out of pure enthusiasm. The only professional actress in the film is Victoria Bulyaeva, representing the B. Basangov National Drama Theater. So almost all the roles, including the main ones, were performed by non-professional actors: pensioner Nyamn Sanquev, a first-grader of the Trinity Gymnasium Tagir Shalburov, preschoolers and schoolchildren David Khvan, Altan Lidzhiev, Kira Sambayeva, Elveg Namysov, brothers Egor and Fedor Goryashkiev, Bair Suhurov, Nimgir Bembeev, Buynta Bembeeva, Dayana Sanzhieva, Rumiya Sanzhieva. Arltan was helped to make the film a reality by co-director Kermen Bembeeva and assistant director Danzan Erktn. The result of joint creative efforts was a film story filled with detached tenderness and noble loneliness.
Arltan Bembeev graduated from the Kalmyk State University in Physics and Mathematics in 2002, then studied at the sculpture department of the Penza Art College. His education allowed him to work in Moscow 3D modeling companies and engage in graphic design.
Over time, Arltan realized that creative realization was possible for him in directing. He participated in various outdoor screenings in cinemas in Elista. In December 2021, his film about exile, “Goodbye, Kalmyk Land!” was shown at the October Cinema. The famous painting of the same name by the national artist of Kalmykia Grigory Bembeyev served as the starting point for the creation of the film.
In October 2021, the young director was invited to join the artistic production group of the film “Patient Zero” about the outbreak of HIV infection in Kalmykia (the All-Russian premiere took place in the spring of 2022)…
Writer and poetess Tatiana Badakova shared her impressions after the premiere.: “We met an interesting author and his wonderful work. Auteur cinema is always a kind of surprise. The movie “Soodle” also evoked many different emotions. For the entire 24 minutes that the film lasts, thoughts are constantly working in my head on the problems of human loneliness, the relationship between old people and children, the preservation of my native language, the lack of ordinary empathy and the desire to understand others. I liked the film for its understanding of human psychology, insight into the essence of the indifference that often occurs, subtle symbolism, beautifully chosen music, and children’s play.”
“I’m glad that the film was received very well,” the director himself told us. “The main thing is that after watching there was a heated discussion, people had a lot of questions that I was preparing for internally and which I didn’t even know about. To a greater extent, I make films about people and for people, so their opinion is important to me. But I was especially surprised by how they notice things that I hadn’t even thought about when making the film. We will send this painting to various festivals.”
Meanwhile, in July, Arltan Bembeev will start working on a new film. And the director is looking for actors for his next job: an Asian girl of 5-8 years old and an Asian man of 20-40 years old.
